Online opportunity scams thrive where people hope to earn through skills they already have: conversation, language, and travel. The adverts are confident. The websites may look busy. The request is usually the same: act fast, pay something, or share sensitive information before you can see the work.
Patterns that appear again and again
- Guaranteed income for chatting, with no employer identity.
- Upfront fees for registration, kits, visas, or “activation.”
- Payment that must be made in gift cards, crypto to a personal wallet, or mobile money to an individual’s number.
- A recruiter who refuses email from a company domain.
- Pressure to move to WhatsApp immediately and stop asking questions.
- Hotel programs that require a large membership fee for unspecified luxury stays.
- Requests for intimate photos or videos framed as “training.”
A verification process you can reuse
- Name the company. If you cannot, stop.
- Type the company name into a browser yourself. Do not rely only on a link in a message.
- Find terms, a contact method, and a coherent description of the work.
- Search for the company name plus “scam” and read both complaints and rebuttals carefully.
- Check whether payment terms are written, including who can be paid in your country.
- Never test the offer by sending a small fee “just to see.”
